Seriously... The Waivers Settings

The current waiver setup is getting ridiculous. Is there anyone in this league that wants the waivers setup this way other than Pat? Is there any other league in existence that is setup this way? The only players that should go to waivers are the players that are dropped by someone.

A HUGE part of FF is being the first to pickup a guy when he becomes relevant and the 3-day waiver rule is completely removing that aspect.

Also, was anyone aware that the waivers were setup this way before Week 1 was over and we saw all the players on waivers?

Pat, please AT LEAST consider changing it and/or finding out how the rest of the league feels.

Also, anyone in the league who reads this, please express your opinion.

  1. Every question you asked on here is irrelevant. Does anyone want waivers like this other than Pat. Does it matter? He's the commish. Any gripe should have been brought BEFORE the season. Is there any other league in existence that is setup this way? Does it matter? It's how we're playing. Any grip should have been brought BEFORE the season.

That's an opinion. I find it annoying and completely luck based that the person who happens to stumble across the guy who is relevant gets a major boost in the league. I'd rather the league be set up where we carefully consider picking someone up, where it means something if you do. It's silly that some people just pick up and drop like crazy hoping to stumble across dumb luck to get there team over the edge. There should be a consequence to picking up every one-week wonder that comes along.

Also, the rules were made available to everyone as they logged in the first time. If you didn't care to check the rules of the league, you can't blame Pat for that.

I think that waivers should either continue as is, or should be made to a shorter time. IE: Everyone goes on waivers till the day after their game. Sunday games waivers clear Monday or Tuesday morning, and Monday night games clear Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

  2. Here're my two cents.

I already know 5/12 people in this league like the rules as is. I haven't heard any other opinions other than John and Josh's. Even if it were 1/12 (me), I would not change the rule. This was available to anyone that wanted to bring it up before the season, as David said. Everyone had the opportunity when they signed up for the league.

My argument against making the waiver time being shorter is this: why does it even matter? It changes nothing, except people not being able to see if they got the guy they wanted one day earlier. Most of us have full time jobs now, some have two jobs, and some have 2 jobs and a non-paid internship, and some of us have kids. Some of us have four kids. You get my point.

There are weeks now where I am committed to things Monday and Tuesday *all day*. It's nice to have one more day to think about who to pick up. I don't have the time anymore like I used to, and this is a nice change of pace. I know I'm not alone here, either. Many of us can't spend the time researching how we used to.

Secondly, this makes the waivers part of Fantasy Football that much more important. You're ability to pickup a good player now doesn't depend on whether or not you have plans on Sunday afternoon, it depends on your waiver and how patient you've been to find the right player.

Lastly, its not a HUGE part of Fantasy Football. In many leagues this is the absolute standard for waivers. Let's not pretend that one way to do things is the only way.

We can continue to discuss this, but please understand this: I am not changing the rules no matter how much hooting and hollering people bring. I'm not trying to be insensitive here, but this feels like the 10th time I've had to say it. I hope my position is finally understood. We can consider this for next year, but this year, this is the way it is. (Please though, don't take that as any indication that we necessarily WILL change it next year)

A big waiver wire peace out.

  3. John, can you please explain how it's "getting" ridiculous? It hasn't ever changed.

  4. I'm gonna gave to agree with David and Pat here. Between all of my time commitments, having no waiver wire or a waiver wire really any sooner than now would make this league next to impossible for me to compete in, and I'm a single guy. I don't even care to imagine how hard it would be for the married guys.

Bottom line, leagues aren't about who has the fastest finger. It's about putting yourself in the right position -- whether that is draft day, game day, or waiver wire priority. I think in some ways the waiver wire makes it more challenging (if i pick up Jacoby Jones this week, I lose my waiver wire priority, etc,) and adds a whole 'nother level to this. The only way I would agree to a free agent basis would be if we were in a salary cap league. But we're not.

I stand wholeheartedly nehind Dave and Pat on this one.

  5. Just got a call from Josh, my faithful friend (I really mean that), telling me I may need to adjust my attitude. I appreciate it, the wound of a friend is better than the kiss of an enemy. This isn't a real big wound though, thank goodness there are things in life more significant that Fantasy Football.

I just want to communicate that I do appreciate everyone's comments. I didn't create this blog so people wouldn't post. And I apologize that I've come down too hard on this.

However, I do think that the best thing to do, and the most fair thing is to continue as is. While I know this will annoy some people, it will make the league more fair, and ultimately more competitive. When all players are given the same opportunity to compete, under the same conditions, I view that as more competitive, not less.

Josh brought up a good point. Soon there will be Thursday night games, and we will effectively only have two days to process waivers before the Thursday players become unavailable again. While this shortens the window, it also accentuates the importance of doing the research, and keeping up-to-date from Thursday through Monday so as to out in the best waiver claims possible.

Again, sorry for my attitude. Enjoy week five.

  7. Just so everyone knows, I'm not upset if we leave it as is. I have to admit that I never liked the setup as soon as I noticed it. It became increasingly frustrating over the past few weeks because I went 0/4 on my 1st choice attempted pickups (London Fletcher, Johnny Knox, Jacoby Jones, Jordy Nelson). Although it IS frustrating, I realize it's part of the game that we all have to deal with and I won't complain about it anymore. I do agree that there are different strategies to consider with it setup this way and I also should have read the league setup more carefully (although I don't remember there being any mention of this in Pat's "Rules and Stuff. Important Stuff. Stuff you should read" post). Anyways, I understand that that's the way it is now and I won't complain about it anymore. I'm sorry for voicing my thoughts out of frustration and I hope you will all forgive me.

One thing to note though. I don't think the Thursday games will put anyone on waivers because the current setup is a "Weekly Waiver" of Sunday-Tuesday.

  8. By the way, I'm one of the "married guys" that finds time to be on top of this still. :D

  9. I personally think that Josh's #3 option is horrible, but agree with everything else. ;-)

I think the waiver system in this league is horrible. Its not fair to everyone, really its only fair to those who work on Sunday.

What about yesterday morning when the 9ers signed Crabtree and the first person to go get him was able to pick him up. What about those of us who don't wake up early? Should we put a waiver until noon or something like that? No because thats lame. But according to the way things are set up in our league that would be the "fair" thing to do.

Lastly, I don't know of anyone else who does it this way and I'm sure other leagues have guys that work on Sundays. If you work on Sundays then I say tough luck fellas, not to be a jerk but like I said earlier...I don't wake up earlier then most people and there is no waiver "fairness" in place for those of us who don't wake up early.

  10. also, please correct me if I'm wrong but was this actually ever talked about before the season? I remember Pat saying that we will have waivers but I don't ever remember this specifically being discussed. Again I could be wrong and if I am then someone tell me when this waiver rule was talked about/posted. thanks guys!

  11. Pat, the difference in making the time shorter is this:

Say I'm 12th on waivers, John is 5th David is 2nd Josh is 9th...and we all put in to pick up "the next stud on waivers" on Monday afternoon because the MRI just came back on the guy in front of him. Then the guy who is #1 on waivers who hasn't been paying attention to this injury/situation finds out from a co-worker that so and so is out for the year, and when he gets home on Tuesday after work he picks him up...then on Wed low and behold he wins becuase he has the better waiver position. Explain to me how that is fair? So because you have the better waiver position you get him even though there were guys paying closer attention? Not fair at all.

It goes back to the bear packer example...sure maybe garcia doesn't pick the first team, but if someone makes an offer week 2 and no one else makes an offer until week 8 because their QB just went down I would guess that some where between week 2 and 8 he make take the offer from the week 2 option. Who knows though, I just know that you can argue all this either way.

  12. Anyone know how to do things like this?

Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it's important.
