Ideas for 2011

This post is going to be the central location for keeping record of ideas for next year. Please leave suggestions, ideas, changes, complaints or whatever in the comments section of this page, and as they materialize, I will post them on the "page".

As things progress, if we have any actual proposed changes of significance, Josh, David and I will convene, discuss, and then put things to a vote, where all changes would require 100% approval from the entire league.

All thoughts are welcome!

  1. I added the interceptions idea Josh had, not sure if there are any other ideas floating around in other posts, but if anyone knows of any, feel free to comment it here.

  2. I would like to propose that we don't "forget" to tally and keep track of stats and points at the end of the season (even if the main tallier happens to miss the playoffs...again).

  3. I would like to propose that the NFL doesn't go on strike and effectively ruin our Keeper League for the second year in a row.

  4. I propose that we put penalties into place for the following season for anyone who outperforms any of the league commishes.

Shall we put it to a vote commishes?

  5. Tackle assists should count towards tackle total.

  6. I also agree on the tackle assists. I know we went over it, and I know it doesn't make much difference statistically, but I still don't see why they *shouldn't* count.

  8. Actually, it DOES make a significant difference at times. For example, last week one of my IDPs had 8 solo tackles and 10 tackle assists. As another example, this season London Fletcher has 65 solo tackles and 37 tackle assists. Michael Griffin has 65 solo tackles too but only 20 tackle assists. That's a big difference! As of last week Josh and Ben were one solo tackle apart for the lead. If one of them had Fletcher and one had Griffin then it would make a significant difference and I think it's something that should be, and always should have been, counted.

  11. Here's why it doesn't make a difference (nerdy statistical analysis alert).

Positions in top 25 for tackles and assisted tackles.

    2010 totals (thru week 13)-
    Tackles- 18 LB, 6 S, 1 CB
    Assist Tackles- 19 LB, 4 S, 1 CB, 1 DL

    2009 totals-
    Tackles- 21 LB, 4 S
    Assist Tackles- 18 LB, 5 S, 1 DB, 1 DL

    2008 totals-
    Tackles- 20 LB, 4 S, 1 CB
    Assist Tackles- 21 LB, 3 S, 1 DL

You know why the numbers between tackles and assisted tackles correspond so closely? Because they are all the same guys. Sure there is the occasional outlier, but in 99% of cases, the top tacklers are also going to be the top assisted tacklers. So when you are talking about fantasy teams with 7 defensive players, things are going to average out.

You want to know the difference between Ben's and my assisted tackles? 8

The difference between our total tackles? 11

The guys who get the most tackles also get the most assisted tackles.

  12. Now, with all that being said, you might think that I am arguing against including assisted tackles. I am not, I just don't think the argument for assisted tackles should be made on the fallacious grounds that it makes a significant difference whether they are used or not.

The reasons I DO think they should be counted are:

    1) 1/2 sacks are counted, so why shouldn't 1/2 tackles. You might not SEE the 1/2 sacks being counted, but that is because Yahoo automatically counts a 1/2 sack as a sack. Don't believe me? Check the top 2 sack leaders here- http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/defense/sort/sacks/year/2010/seasontype/2
Cameron Wake has 2 weeks and Clay Matthews 1 week in which 1/2 sacks were recorded. But Yahoo records them as full sacks. A shared tackle is still a tackle (even if you only count it as 1/2 of one) just as a shared sack is still a sack.

    2) There is no reason that I can see NOT to include assisted tackles. Even if you think it doesn't matter (which I agree with) the fact is that it COULD matter. And that being the case, I think they should be counted.

  13. I think I'm missing something in what you're saying, but Yahoo! does count half sacks.

  14. They count the 1/2 sacks for the week to week totals, but for the year to date totals they round up to the full sack total. For example, Jared Allen really only has 8.5 sacks, but his total on Yahoo is 9 sacks.

  15. This is also voted on with a commissioner majority, and the tackles at this point will not be counted this year or in the future.

I'm open to putting this up for a league vote in the offseason for future years. If any changes were to occur it would require a unanimous approval in a secret ballot (e-mail).

Thanks for keeping it real, league! :)

Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it's important.
